Empowering Bilateral Trade & Investment Between India and Myanmar

The India-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce (IMCC) has identified seven key verticals that are vital for the development and enhancement of bilateral economic relations. These sectors represent the most promising areas for trade, investment, innovation, and collaboration between India and Myanmar. IMCC has established dedicated committees for each vertical to support businesses, encourage dialogue, and promote sectoral growth.

Pharmaceutical and Healthcare

Myanmar’s healthcare sector is growing rapidly, but still faces challenges in access, quality, and infrastructure. There are only a limited number of domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing units in the country. With its globally recognized pharmaceutical industry, India is well-positioned to contribute by supplying affordable medicines, medical equipment, hospital infrastructure, and telemedicine services. This vertical promotes collaborations in healthcare delivery, public health initiatives, and medical education.

Agriculture

Agriculture is the backbone of Myanmar’s economy, employing more than 75% of its population directly or indirectly. There is vast potential for improving productivity, sustainability, and value-added processing. India, with its experience in agricultural technology, research, and food processing, can play a major role in supporting Myanmar’s agricultural development. Opportunities include joint ventures in farming, agri-machinery, irrigation systems, fertilizers, and farm-to-market logistics.

Tourism and Medical Tourism

Both countries are rich in cultural, historical, and natural heritage, making tourism a high-potential sector. Religious and spiritual tourism, ecotourism, and heritage circuits can be developed to enhance connectivity and understanding. Additionally, Myanmar citizens are increasingly seeking medical treatment in India, creating strong opportunities in medical tourism. This vertical focuses on building travel infrastructure, promoting bilateral tourism, and facilitating partnerships between hospitals, tour operators, and travel agencies.

Garment & Textile

Myanmar is becoming a hub for garment manufacturing due to competitive labor costs and increasing export demand. India, being one of the world’s largest textile producers, can offer technical know-how, raw materials like cotton and yarn, machinery, and workforce training. These vertical aims to encourage value chain integration, joint manufacturing, and export collaboration to global markets.

Logistics

Efficient logistics are critical to boosting trade. The India-Myanmar transport corridors — including road, rail, sea, and inland waterways — are opening up new possibilities for smoother, faster trade routes. This vertical focuses on improving connectivity, port infrastructure, warehousing, and customs facilitation.

IT, Soft Skills & Services

As Myanmar is one of the emerging economies in the world, to compete with other growing economies its vital to catch up with the latest technology in the country. Technology has become a back bone of development in this era, as a nation Myanmar is at the stage.

Power & Energy

Historically, Myanmar has had one of the lowest per capita energy consumption rates in Asia. However, the past few years have seen increased demand and a rise in foreign investment in power generation, especially in renewable energy. Indian companies are actively exploring opportunities in hydro, solar, and thermal power. These vertical supports knowledge sharing, infrastructure development, and public-private partnerships in energy access and grid expansion.
