The Embassy of India in Yangon, in association with the India-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce (IMCC), organized the India-Myanmar Business Conclave 2025 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Yangon on 10 January 2025. The event provided an important platform to policy makers, businesses and other stakeholders to connect and engage for fostering closer economic and trade ties between India and Myanmar.
H.E. U Minn Minn, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Commerce, Government of Myanmar and H.E. Shri Abhay Thakur, Ambassador of India to Myanmar addressed the gathering, underlining the commitment of both the governments to take further steps to strengthen bilateral cooperation in economic and commercial field. Shri Siddharth Mahajan, joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India delivered his remarks virtually, highlighting the substantial untapped potential between the two countries and the recent steps taken by the Government of India to enhance trade links with Myanmar. In addition to the Union Ministry of Commerce, senior officials from the Ministry of Planning and Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Tourism and Central Bank of Myanmar participated in the Conclave. President, IMCC and Vice President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) also delivered remarks at the event.
The Conclave served as a platform to understand ongoing bilateral mechanisms and main areas of cooperation and to deliberate on future avenues for mutual collaboration. Discussions were centered around major initiatives having potential to boost economic and trade cooperation, including the incentivization of the Rupee-Kyat trade settlement mechanism, early conclusion of the Coastal Shipping Agreement, petroleum, energy and power cooperation and digital payment collaboration, such as the RuPay card and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Myanmar.
Discussions at the Conclave helped in identifying key sectors for collaboration, including infrastructure development through projects like the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, as well as opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, technology and tourism. These areas hold immense potential for fostering regional growth and connectivity.
Over 300 business persons participated including, banking leaders, prominent business groups and senior office bearers from leading business associations like UMFCCI, Overseas Agro Traders Association, Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Merchant’s Association etc.
The Conclave concluded with a reaffirmation of the strong commitment of both nations to their bilateral partnership. Deliberations at the event also emphasized on the importance of leveraging shared cultural and historical ties to unlock new economic opportunities. The active participation of the business community was hailed as a driving force for innovation, investment, and sustainable growth.
